Book Review: The Power of Six by Pittacus Lore

The Power of Six
Author:  Pittacus Lore
Publisher:  HarperCollins
Date Published:  August 23rd 2011

From Goodreads:

I've seen him on the news. Followed the stories about what happened in Ohio. John Smith, out there, on the run. To the world, he's a mystery. But to me . . . he's one of us.

Nine of us came here, but sometimes I wonder if time has changed us—if we all still believe in our mission. How can I know? There are six of us left. We're hiding, blending in, avoiding contact with one another . . . but our Legacies are developing, and soon we'll be equipped to fight. Is John Number Four, and is his appearance the sign I've been waiting for? And what about Number Five and Six? Could one of them be the raven-haired girl with the stormy eyes from my dreams? The girl with powers that are beyond anything I could ever imagine? The girl who may be strong enough to bring the six of us together? They caught Number One in Malaysia. Number Two in England. And Number Three in Kenya. They tried to catch Number Four in Ohio—and failed. I am Number Seven. One of six still alive. And I'm ready to fight.

-----

I really really loved The Power of Six.  We find out about number seven, Marina.  The Power of Six changes points of views from Marina and John, number four.   Along for the ride are number Six and Sam.

I thought it was great how Sam has a bigger role in The Power of Six.  We get a bigger picture of why he's a character, and how important his role is in the war with the Mogadorians.  The girl power in this sequel is freaking awesome.  I love kick ass female characters.

I didn't like that in the beginning number four couldn't stop thinking about Sara, but that didn't last too long. I didn't like her in I am Number Four, so I was ecstatic that she wasn't really a factor in The Power of Six

It definitely ends in somewhat of a cliffhanger which totally sucks.  I can't wait to read the next book.

Book Review: Just Friends with Benefits by Meredith Schorr

Just Friends with Benefits
Author:  Meredith Schorr
Publisher:  Wings ePress
Date Published:  2010

From Goodreads:

When a friend urges Stephanie Cohen not to put all her eggs in one bastard, the advice falls on deaf ears. Stephanie's college crush on Craig Hille has been awakened 13 years later as if soaked in a can of Red Bull and she is determined not to let the guy who got away once, get away twice.

Stephanie, a 32-year-old paralegal from Washington, D.C., is a 70's and 80's television trivia buff who can recite the starting lineup of the New York Yankees and go beer for beer with the guys. And despite her failure to get married and pro-create prior to entering her thirties, she has so far managed to keep her overbearing mother from sticking her head in the oven. Just Friends with Benefits is the humorous story of Stephanie's pursuit of love, her adventures in friendship, and her journey to discover what really matters.

-------

I received Just Friends with Benefits from a kind book blogger who read my comment I left on her review about wanting to read it.  I wish I still had our email exchanges so I can remember who it was...but if you read this THANK YOU!  As soon as it came in the mail I started it and really fell in love with these close knit circle of friends that breathe life into Just Friends with Benefits.

The Breakdown:

Characters-  There is a little bit of everything in the group.  There is the clown, the married couple, the cute conservative quiet one, the crazy wild one, and the laid back looking for love one.  They all really complimented each other, and made the interactions between them all the better.  Stephanie, the main character is the looking for love character, and though at times she could be really stupid about all things about love, and plenty of times you want to scream at her to get with it, you really do like her.  She's real, and basically makes a lot of "WTH" decisions but don't we all, especially when it comes to the opposite sex.

The What-What-  Basically from the description we know that Stephanie is ready to put herself out there when it comes to her college crush, Craig, who happens to be the ultra conservative quiet one of the group.  She wants him, and she's going to try to get him, some stuff happens (gonna have to read it), and you have some a-ha moments and everything comes together, but not in your stereotypical way.

Overall-  It really is a fun book, some minor flaws but nothing major.  The one annoying fault is the damn cover.
Really? Reallly?

Book Review: Jellicoe Road by Melina Marchetta

Jellicoe Road
Author:  Melina Marchetta
Publisher:  HarperCollins Publishers
Date Published:  March 9th 2010

From Goodreads:

At age eleven, Taylor Markham was abandoned by her mother. At fourteen, she ran away from boarding school, only to be tracked down and brought back by a mysterious stranger. Now seventeen, Taylor's the reluctant leader of her school's underground community, whose annual territory war with the Townies and visiting Cadets has just begun. This year, though, the Cadets are led by Jonah Griggs, and Taylor can't avoid his intense gaze for long. To make matters worse, Hannah, the one adult Taylor trusts, has disappeared. But if Taylor can piece together the clues Hannah left behind, the truth she uncovers might not just settle her past, but also change her future.

---------------
Jellicoe Road is one of those books that I had high expectations of because of all of the praise it has been getting from book bloggers.  I went into thinking this better rock my world, and it did.

I loved the way the boarding school had territory wars with the Townies, and Cadets.  Everything in Jellicoe Road circled around the war, and as secrets starting unraveling I grew more and more into it.  Though everything circles around the wars, Jellicoe Road isn't about the wars.  It's about family, life, secrets  and painful decisions.  I really enjoyed how Melina Marchetta let everything unravel, the flow of the story, and the words she chose were perfect.  The description describes it as lyrical, and it totally is.

The characters were great.  I especially loved the chemistry between Taylor and Jonah.  It wasn't unbelievable and Jonah is awesome!  For reals!!!

Seriously, if you have this sitting on your shelves and have not read it, read it.  If you don't have a copy, go buy one.

Randomness

Sometimes I feel so out of the loop with this whole book blogging thing.  As I skim through my google reader I see that it's Book Ban Week, it's Netgalley month, or I don't know, Blond haired authors Week, and I wonder is there a calendar for book bloggers that says what week or day it is for book lovers or did some random book blogger just get up one morning  and announced that it is "you fill it in" week.

I look at my blog with just reviews, and yes sometimes I get lazy and behind and I'll do a mini review that consist of max three sentences, but anyways I basically just do reviews, and think to myself is that good enough.  The answer for me is YES, because in the end this is something for me.  I only have to meet my expectations, and I'll admit they are not set high for blogging.  If I am enjoying it and having fun then I am doing it right and my way.  Don't get me wrong I love that I have followers, but I don't have many like some bloggers and I am okay with that.  I don't go around introducing myself to new people and say " I book blog and have 1,000,000 (does anyone have that many?) followers".  BUT I do love my followers!  Thank you for finding something that is worth following Coffee, Books and Laundry!!!!

Lately my blogging has took a backseat to my weight loss journey I am on.  23 lbs lost so far.  Can I get a HELL YEAH!!!!  Almost there to my high school weight.  My reading has took a nose dive, and I will make plans to take a day and just read, but it never happens.  Yesterday  my plan was to read, but instead I took a nap, watched Transformers and surfed the internet.  I need a book that is going to rock my world.  My husband says you just need that one book.  Yep, I just need that one book that will remind me why I love reading so freaking much.  Any suggestions?  Last book that I loved was "One Day", just to give you an idea.

Okay, I've taken enough of your time.  Please excuse any spelling and punctuation mistakes, I just typed without a care in the world....boy does it feel good, not going to proofread just going to hit the publish button.

That's how I roll these days!!!!
